The wall. The mythical creature, the silver bullet, that Donald Trump has convinced his base is absolutely necessary, might get built after all.
The “president” has decided that he will use his newly found leverage over Dreamers as the way to make his wall happen. Trump has outlined his demands which must be met in order to gain his signature on any legislation that protects the children of DACA.
The White House said in order to properly protect the nation’s borders, Congress must approve of the construction of a border wall to deter human and drug trafficking.
“Success of border walls are undeniable from the perspective of their operators,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection acting Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said Sunday.
“These findings outline reforms that must be included as part of any legislation addressing the status of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients,” Trump said in a statement following the announcement of the proposal on Sunday. “Without these reforms, illegal immigration and chain migration, which severely and unfairly burden American workers and taxpayers, will continue without end.” – The Hill
Trump continues to insist that the wall will lower illegal immigration and the flow of drugs, as if people are literally just walking across the border. It has been shown that net migration over the border from Mexico has been decreasing for years. Yet Trump has convinced his base that Mexicans are the reason some of them are unable to get jobs. Of course all of Trump’s arguments have been proven to be false, but that doesn’t stop his spineless base from parroting back his talking points.
Trump’s demands are going to be tough on Democrats and moderate Republicans. This is setting up as a showdown to get legislation done under a very small window. If Dreamers are booted you are going to see many moderate Republicans struggling to get re-elected. Trump is playing the long game to be able to shift the blame to Congress. That’s a sound strategy that may prove to be a huge win for him.
The rest of us are left to wonder when this political game of roulette will end. His supporters are foaming at the mouth at the possibility of deporting brown Americans in mass. And nothing gets them as excited as the supposed “prototypes” of the wall that are being shown in the video below. Take a look for yourself.
